Live news: Governments and markets react to Trump’s moves

Mexico will wait until Sunday to unveil countermeasures to Donald Trump’s 25 per cent tariffs on its goods, President Claudia Sheinbaum has said.

Sheinbaum said on Tuesday that her country’s response would include both tariff and non-tariff measures.

But she left the door open for further negotiations to defuse the incipient trade war, underlining both the economic damage caused by tariffs and Mexico’s co-operation with the US against fentanyl trafficking and organised crime.

The Mexican president denounced the reasons given for the White House’s move as “offensive, defamatory and without substance”.

In announcing the tariffs the day before, the US alleged that “Mexican drug trafficking organisations, the world’s leading fentanyl traffickers, operate unhindered due to an intolerable relationship with the government of Mexico.”

Sheinbaum said she would hold a phone call with Trump this week, most likely on Thursday.
